This woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu depicts the kabuki actor Fujimura Handayu in the role of a courtesan. The Torii school, to which Kiyomasu belonged, held a dominant position in the production of theatrical prints during the Edo period. Their style is defined by bold, thick lines and a dynamic sense of movement, often referred to as 'tan-e' or hand-coloured prints, though this example relies on the strength of the printed line and limited colour application.
The figure is rendered with the characteristic 'mimizu-gaki' or earthworm-style lines, which are thick, swelling, and tapering strokes that convey the weight and volume of the actor's costume. The composition is stark, focusing entirely on the actor against a plain background. The actor holds a hat, a common prop in theatrical portrayals of women, which adds a layer of artifice to the performance. The kimono features a mix of geometric patterns, including a bold checkerboard design, which contrasts with the more delicate floral motifs contained within circular medallions.
Kiyomasu was instrumental in establishing the visual language of the Torii school, which focused on the exaggerated, heroic, and often flamboyant nature of kabuki performances. The print captures the essence of the 'aragoto' style, even when applied to a female role, through the assertive posture and the confident handling of the ink. This work provides a clear example of early eighteenth-century Japanese printmaking, where the emphasis was placed on the graphic power of the line rather than atmospheric depth or realistic shading.
