A refined ink and colour study of the bodhisattva Fugen mounted on a white elephant, executed on silk by the Japanese artist Kitao Masayoshi.
This work by Kitao Masayoshi, also known as Kuwagata Keisai, depicts the bodhisattva Fugen mounted upon a white elephant. Fugen is a figure associated with the practice of Buddhist teachings, often represented in Japanese art as a protector of those who study the sutras. The artist employs a refined ink-wash technique, balancing the solid, grounded form of the elephant with the fluid, elegant lines of the figure's robes.
The elephant is rendered with subtle shading, suggesting volume and weight, while the bodhisattva is depicted with the delicate facial features characteristic of the period's aesthetic. The choice of silk as a medium allows for a soft, atmospheric quality, particularly in the treatment of the mist or clouds gathered around the elephant's feet. This grounding element provides a sense of ethereal movement to the composition.
Kitao Masayoshi was a versatile artist who transitioned from the Ukiyo-e school to a more individualistic style, often incorporating elements of the Kano school. His work here demonstrates a mastery of brush control, where the line weight varies to define both the anatomical structure of the animal and the intricate folds of the fabric. The colour palette remains restrained, focusing on the contrast between the dark, deep blue of the robes and the pale, neutral tones of the silk background. This piece reflects the intersection of religious subject matter and the secular artistic techniques prevalent in late 18th-century Japan. It is a fine example of the artist's ability to blend traditional iconography with a personal, expressive approach to form and space.
