A 14th-century Japanese hanging scroll depicting Fudō Myōō and four attendants, constructed entirely from sacred Sanskrit seed syllables.
This hanging scroll depicts the deity Fudō Myōō, a central figure in Japanese Esoteric Buddhism, surrounded by four attendants. The work is executed in a distinctive style where the figures are formed by the outlines of Sanskrit seed syllables, or 'shuji'. This technique, known as 'shuji-e', integrates the sacred script directly into the physical form of the deity, merging the visual representation with the textual essence of the mantra.
Fudō Myōō stands in the centre, holding his characteristic sword and rope, symbols of his power to cut through ignorance and bind negative forces. The four attendants are arranged around him, each standing on a rocky pedestal. The composition is sparse, relying on the precision of the ink lines against the aged silk background. The artist, Chikai, demonstrates a high degree of control, ensuring that the complex Sanskrit characters maintain the anatomical proportions and posture of the figures while remaining legible as sacred script.
This piece reflects the devotional practices of the period, where the act of viewing or creating such images was considered a form of meditation. The muted palette and the delicate, calligraphic line quality emphasise the spiritual nature of the subject. The scroll retains its original mounting, which provides a frame for the central image. The work serves as a clear example of the intersection between calligraphy and religious painting in medieval Japan, where the written word possesses inherent power. The figures are not merely drawn but are constructed from the very syllables that invoke the deity, creating a direct link between the viewer and the divine presence.
