This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the twentieth station of the Tokaido road, Fuchu. It belongs to the series known as the Reisho Tokaido, named for the clerical script used in the cartouches. Unlike the earlier, more atmospheric Hoeido edition, this series employs a more rigid, formalised style of line work and composition. The scene captures a bustling evening atmosphere at a post station, where travellers and local residents interact under the soft glow of a lantern.

Hiroshige organises the composition with a clear focus on the movement of figures through the space. A rider on horseback occupies the right side, while a group of pedestrians and a palanquin carrier navigate the foreground. The architecture of the station buildings provides a structured backdrop, with the dark, vertical forms of trees framing the scene. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted blues, greys, and earthy tones to convey the transition from dusk to night. The use of flat colour areas and distinct outlines is characteristic of the Ukiyo-e tradition, where the printmaker prioritised clarity and narrative detail over realistic shading.

The Reisho Tokaido series demonstrates Hiroshige's ability to adapt his approach to suit different publishing requirements. While the Hoeido series is often praised for its poetic weather effects, this later work offers a more documentary perspective on the daily life of the Edo period. The figures are rendered with precise attention to their attire and posture, providing insight into the social dynamics of travel along the Tokaido. The print serves as a record of the infrastructure and social habits of nineteenth-century Japan, capturing the rhythm of a busy transit point.
