A seventeenth-century Italian still life featuring a precise arrangement of seasonal fruit and flowers against a dark, atmospheric background.
Orsola Maddalena Caccia, an Italian nun and painter, produced this still life during the seventeenth century. The composition displays a collection of fruit and flowers arranged upon a stone ledge against a dark, neutral background. The artist employs a precise technique to render the textures of the apples, pears, and pomegranates, alongside the delicate petals of tulips and irises.
Caccia was the daughter of the painter Guglielmo Caccia and spent her life within the convent of Moncalvo. Her work often features botanical subjects, reflecting the monastic interest in nature and the cultivation of gardens. The arrangement is balanced, with vertical floral stems providing structure to the rounded forms of the fruit below. The lighting is controlled, drawing attention to the surface details of the produce, such as the subtle variations in skin colour and the soft shadows cast upon the ledge.
This piece demonstrates the conventions of Baroque still life painting, where the focus remains on the observation of natural forms. The inclusion of specific varieties of flowers alongside seasonal fruit suggests a symbolic reading common to the period, often associated with the fleeting nature of life. The composition avoids excessive clutter, allowing each element to occupy its own space. The palette is composed of muted earth tones, punctuated by the brighter hues of the fruit and the pale colours of the flowers. Caccia's approach to this genre is characterised by a clear, methodical presentation of her subjects, providing a view into the artistic output of a seventeenth-century convent studio.
