A circular fresco fragment depicting the centaur Sagittarius, attributed to the Italian Renaissance master Baldassarre Tommaso Peruzzi.
This circular composition depicts the centaur Sagittarius, a figure drawn from classical mythology and the zodiac. Baldassarre Tommaso Peruzzi, a versatile architect and painter of the Italian High Renaissance, executed this work for the Villa Stati-Mattei in Rome. The design reflects the period interest in antique motifs, where classical subjects were integrated into domestic decorative schemes.
The centaur is shown in profile, drawing a bow with muscular tension. Peruzzi employs a clear, linear style that emphasises the anatomical form of the creature. The figure occupies the circular frame with a sense of movement, as the tail and hind legs suggest a forward gallop. The background remains simple, allowing the focus to rest entirely on the mythological subject.
Peruzzi was known for his work in perspective and his ability to adapt classical forms to contemporary architectural spaces. This fresco fragment demonstrates his skill in creating figures that possess both weight and grace. The treatment of the centaur shows an awareness of Roman antiquity, likely influenced by the archaeological discoveries and the study of ancient sculpture prevalent in Rome during the early sixteenth century.
As a decorative element, this piece functions as a study of form and movement. The circular format, or tondo, was a common choice for ceiling or wall decorations in Renaissance villas. It provides a contained space for the narrative figure, ensuring that the composition remains balanced within the architectural environment. The work remains a clear example of the aesthetic priorities of the Roman High Renaissance, where the clarity of line and the study of the human figure were paramount. This print captures the texture and character of the original plaster surface, preserving the historical quality of the fresco.
