A Coptic textile fragment featuring two embroidered birds on a linen ground, dating from late antique Egypt.
This textile fragment originates from the Coptic period in Egypt, a time when Christian iconography began to merge with traditional Hellenistic and Egyptian decorative motifs. The piece consists of a plain-weave linen ground, upon which two avian figures are rendered in wool embroidery. The birds are depicted in profile, their forms simplified into clear, readable silhouettes that prioritise decorative clarity over anatomical precision.
The embroidery technique utilises a dark thread to outline the figures, providing a sharp contrast against the lighter, weathered linen background. The bird on the right is shown with a curved beak, possibly representing a pelican or a similar water bird, while the bird on the left appears more generic in its avian form. The composition is sparse, focusing entirely on these two figures which likely formed part of a larger decorative border or a repeating pattern on a garment or furnishing fabric.
Textiles of this nature were often used for tunics or wall hangings. The survival of such fragments provides insight into the domestic and religious life of late antique Egypt. The material evidence shows the degradation of the linen fibres over centuries, yet the embroidered motifs remain legible. This print captures the texture of the original weave and the specific character of the needlework, offering a view into the aesthetic preferences of the era. The simplicity of the design reflects the functional yet ornamental approach common to Coptic textile production, where animal motifs were frequently employed for their symbolic or purely aesthetic value within a broader decorative scheme.
