This textile fragment originates from Egypt during the Late Antique period, likely dating to the 4th or 5th century. It is a fine example of Coptic weaving, which often utilised a combination of linen for the ground fabric and wool for the decorative elements. The piece demonstrates the technical skill of weavers who worked within the Mediterranean tradition, creating small-scale figurative motifs that were often applied as decorative panels to larger garments or household linens.
The composition features two distinct figures rendered in a dark, contrasting wool against a lighter linen background. On the left, a small dog is depicted in motion, while to its right, a hare appears to be interacting with a cluster of grapes. The figures are stylised rather than naturalistic, reflecting the aesthetic preferences of the era where clarity of form took precedence over anatomical precision.
