An 18th-century Indian textile fragment featuring delicate floral embroidery in metal thread and spangles on a sheer muslin ground.
This textile fragment originates from 18th-century India, a period when the production of fine muslin and decorative embroidery reached a high level of technical refinement. The piece is composed of a sheer, lightweight muslin base, which serves as a ground for a repeating floral motif. The embroidery utilises metal thread and small, reflective spangles, creating a surface that catches light with subtle movement.
The design follows a structured, grid-like arrangement of individual flowering plants. Each plant is rendered with a degree of stylisation typical of Mughal decorative arts, where botanical accuracy is balanced with the requirements of symmetry and pattern repetition. The leaves and petals are filled with dense stitching, providing a contrast to the sparse, airy quality of the muslin background. The spangles are distributed across the field, adding a metallic shimmer that suggests the opulence associated with courtly attire of the era.
Such fragments were often part of larger lengths of fabric intended for turbans or other ceremonial garments. The use of metal thread, often referred to as zardozi or similar metallic embroidery techniques, indicates that this cloth was intended for a person of status. The preservation of this fragment allows for an examination of the material culture of the period, specifically the intersection of fine weaving and surface ornamentation. The repetition of the floral sprig, or buta, is a characteristic feature of Indian textile history, appearing across various media from woven silks to block-printed cottons. This specific example demonstrates the precision required to apply metallic elements to a delicate, semi-transparent fabric without compromising the structural integrity of the base material.
