A detailed engraving by Jan Harmensz. Muller after Cornelis Cornelisz. van Haarlem, depicting a complex allegorical scene of figures beneath the goddess Fortune.
This engraving, titled Fortuna verdeelt haar geschenken (Fortune Distributing Her Gifts), represents the right sheet of a larger composition. Executed by the engraver Jan Harmensz. Muller after a design by Cornelis Cornelisz. van Haarlem, the work captures the characteristic tension and muscularity associated with the Haarlem Mannerist school. The scene depicts a crowd of figures in various states of agitation and physical exertion, all gathered beneath the figure of Fortune, who stands atop a sphere in the upper left corner.
The composition is defined by the exaggerated musculature of the figures, a hallmark of Cornelisz. van Haarlem's approach to the human form. The bodies are twisted and contorted, demonstrating the artist's interest in complex anatomical poses and the display of physical strength. The engraving technique employed by Muller uses dense hatching and cross-hatching to model the musculature, creating a sense of volume and weight within the figures. The interplay of light and shadow across the skin surfaces provides a tactile quality to the print.
In the foreground, a seated female figure rests her head on her hand, her posture suggesting contemplation or exhaustion amidst the surrounding chaos. To her right, male figures are depicted with their backs turned, their bodies rendered with a focus on the definition of the spine and shoulder muscles. The background remains relatively sparse, allowing the focus to remain on the interaction and physical presence of the figures. Latin inscriptions at the bottom of the sheet provide moral commentary on the nature of fortune and human endeavour, typical of the intellectual climate of the late sixteenth-century Netherlands. This print serves as a fine example of the collaborative relationship between designers and printmakers during this period, where the dissemination of complex allegorical themes was achieved through the technical precision of the burin.
