A 1861 Yokohama-e woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitsuya documenting the arrival of foreigners in Japan through a blend of illustration and ethnographic text.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitsuya, produced in 1861, belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e. These prints emerged during the final years of the Edo period, documenting the arrival of foreigners in the port city of Yokohama after Japan ended its policy of national isolation. The work captures the curiosity and cultural friction of the era, depicting a Western man accompanied by a family of individuals described in the text as pygmies.
The composition is characteristic of the period, combining illustrative figures with extensive calligraphic text. The artist provides specific details, including the height of the figures and their names, presented in a manner that mimics a scientific or ethnographic record. The Western man is shown in a dark frock coat and top hat, holding a cane, while the smaller figures are rendered with exaggerated features. The inclusion of handprints on the left side of the composition further emphasises the pseudo-scientific framing of the subjects.
Yoshitsuya, a student of the famous Utagawa Kuniyoshi, was known for his imaginative and often eccentric subjects. In this print, he employs a flat, graphic style typical of the Ukiyo-e tradition, using clear outlines and a muted colour palette. The work serves as a historical document of how Japanese artists and the public attempted to categorise and understand the unfamiliar visitors arriving on their shores. It reflects the blend of fascination and misunderstanding that defined early encounters between Japan and the West. The print remains a compelling example of how visual media was used to process rapid social change during the mid-nineteenth century.
