A refined seventeenth-century Mughal miniature by Mushfiq, depicting a narrative scene from Jami's Five Treasures with delicate gold and mineral pigment detail.
This exquisite miniature, attributed to the artist Mushfiq, originates from a manuscript of the Panj Ganj, or Five Treasures, by the poet Jami. Produced during the early seventeenth century, the work reflects the synthesis of Persian artistic traditions and the specific stylistic developments of the Mughal court. The composition is structured around a multi-level architectural setting, a common device in Persianate painting to depict simultaneous narrative events within a single frame.
The scene displays a high degree of technical precision, particularly in the rendering of the figures and the surrounding decorative elements. The artist employs a refined palette, using mineral pigments and gold leaf to define the garments, the architectural tiles, and the floral motifs. The figures are depicted in profile or three-quarter view, characteristic of the period, with attention given to the subtle gestures and expressions that convey the narrative tension of the scene. The integration of Nasta'liq script into the margins and the central panels demonstrates the importance of calligraphy as a visual component of the page, where text and image exist in a balanced relationship.
Mushfiq, active during the early 1600s, demonstrates a mastery of the Mughal style, which is noted for its clarity, attention to naturalistic detail, and the use of a flattened perspective that prioritises decorative harmony over spatial depth. The inclusion of small birds, flowering plants, and the carefully observed architectural details provides a sense of place, while the overall arrangement remains focused on the human interactions at the centre of the composition. This print captures the delicate brushwork and the luminosity of the original pigments, offering a view into the sophisticated world of seventeenth-century manuscript production.
