A serene ink and light colour study of birds and spring flora, reflecting the refined aesthetic of the Muromachi period by Kano Motonobu.
Kano Motonobu is a central figure in the history of Japanese painting, known for establishing the stylistic foundations of the Kano school. This work exemplifies the kacho-ga tradition, which focuses on the depiction of birds and flowers. The composition employs a minimalist approach, utilising negative space to suggest the atmosphere of a spring morning.
In the upper left, a single bird is captured in flight, its form rendered with economical brushwork. Below, two ducks rest upon the water, their presence anchored by the subtle suggestion of a shoreline. To the right, a flowering branch extends into the frame, providing a delicate balance to the open expanse of the paper. The ink wash technique creates a sense of depth and soft light, typical of the period's aesthetic preferences for understated elegance.
As a leader of the Kano school, Motonobu synthesised the techniques of Chinese ink painting with indigenous Japanese decorative sensibilities. This work demonstrates his ability to combine precise observation of nature with a structured, balanced composition. The muted palette and controlled brushstrokes reflect the meditative quality often associated with Zen-influenced art of the Muromachi era. By focusing on the interaction between the avian subjects and their environment, the artist invites the viewer to observe a quiet, fleeting moment in the natural world. The work remains a clear example of the technical proficiency and stylistic restraint that defined the Kano school for generations.
