This work by Yu Xing, a painter active during the Qing Dynasty, demonstrates the traditional bird-and-flower genre. The composition features a vertical orientation, typical of hanging scrolls, where flowering branches extend from a rocky outcrop. The artist employs a delicate application of ink and colour on silk, capturing the soft, pendulous blossoms and the textured leaves of the plant. Below the flora, two fish swim in a shallow space, providing a sense of movement and depth to the lower portion of the frame.
Yu Xing was known for his technical precision and his ability to render natural subjects with a balance of observation and stylistic convention.
