A fine stipple engraving by Francesco Bartolozzi after a design by Angelica Kauffman, depicting the goddess Flora and attendants gathering flowers.
This stipple engraving, titled Flora, is a collaborative work between the painter Angelica Kauffman and the engraver Francesco Bartolozzi. Published in London in 1787, the print captures a scene of classical allegory. Three female figures, draped in flowing garments reminiscent of ancient Greek attire, engage in the gathering and arrangement of spring flowers. The composition is contained within an oval frame, a common format for eighteenth-century decorative prints.
Bartolozzi, an Italian engraver who spent much of his career in London, was a master of the stipple technique. This method involves creating tonal variations through clusters of dots rather than continuous lines. The result is a soft, painterly quality that mimics the appearance of chalk drawings. The figures are rendered with grace, their poses reflecting the balanced, harmonious ideals of the Neoclassical period. The inclusion of verse from James Thomson's poem, The Seasons, beneath the image provides a literary context, linking the visual representation of the goddess of flowers to the broader cultural interest in nature and pastoral themes during the Enlightenment.
Kauffman, a founding member of the Royal Academy, provided the original design, which Bartolozzi translated into print. The collaboration between these two artists was highly successful, producing numerous works that were widely collected across Europe. The sepia tone of the print adds to its antique character, making it a representative example of the printmaking output of the late eighteenth century. The attention to detail in the floral garlands and the gentle expressions of the figures demonstrate the technical precision required for stipple engraving. This print remains a clear record of the aesthetic preferences of the Georgian era, where classical mythology and poetry were frequently integrated into domestic art.
