A study of traditional fishing boats on the Mediterranean shore, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1888 during his time in the south of France.
In June 1888, Vincent van Gogh travelled from Arles to the coastal village of Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. During this brief excursion, he produced a series of works capturing the Mediterranean coastline. This painting depicts several traditional fishing boats, known as tartanes, resting upon the sandy shore. The composition focuses on the rhythmic arrangement of the hulls and the tall, slender masts that reach into the sky.
Van Gogh employs a distinct application of paint, using short, directional strokes to define the texture of the sand, the movement of the sea, and the shifting clouds above. The palette is dominated by cool blues and greens, which contrast with the warm, earthy tones of the beach. The boats themselves are rendered with clear outlines and saturated colours, providing a sense of structure against the fluid environment. One boat, marked with the name 'Amitié', sits in the foreground, its form anchored by the artist's deliberate brushwork.
This work demonstrates the artist's interest in the interplay between light and colour during his time in the south of France. By observing the local maritime culture, he sought to capture the specific atmosphere of the Mediterranean coast. The sky is rendered with swirling, agitated marks that suggest a breezy day, while the sea remains relatively calm, meeting the horizon in a simple, horizontal line. The painting remains a clear example of his ability to synthesise observation with a personal, expressive technique, moving away from the strict naturalism of his earlier years. The focus remains on the physical presence of the vessels and the surrounding coastal elements, presented with a directness that characterises his work from this period.
