A striking 1952 woodcut by M.C. Escher, featuring interlocking fish forms emerging from rhythmic, wave-like patterns.
M.C. Escher, a Dutch graphic artist, produced this woodcut in 1952. The composition demonstrates his interest in tessellation and the mathematical division of a plane. Escher often explored how shapes could interlock to fill a two-dimensional surface without gaps, a concept he refined through his study of Moorish tile patterns in the Alhambra.
In this work, the artist employs a high-contrast black and white palette to define the forms of fish as they emerge from a series of undulating lines. These lines suggest the movement of water, creating a rhythmic pattern that guides the eye across the surface. The fish are arranged in a repeating sequence, where the negative space around one form becomes the positive shape of another. This technique forces the viewer to shift their focus between the aquatic creatures and the surrounding current.
Escher was known for his precise technical skill in woodcut and lithography. He avoided traditional shading, preferring clear, bold lines to articulate his geometric puzzles. The work does not rely on perspective or depth, but rather on the flat, logical arrangement of repeating motifs. By merging organic subjects with rigid, wave-like patterns, he creates a visual paradox that remains a signature of his career. This print is a clear example of his ability to combine artistic intuition with rigorous geometric principles, resulting in a balanced, orderly image that invites close inspection of its construction.
