Known as the First Series of Life-Sized Heads, these works represent a technical achievement in eighteenth-century printmaking. Frye, who was also a porcelain manufacturer at Bow, applied his understanding of light and shadow to the copper plate. The portrait depicts a woman in profile, her hands clasped in a gesture of quiet contemplation. The composition relies on the tonal range of the mezzotint process, which allows for smooth transitions between deep blacks and soft highlights.
