A masterful early work by Pablo Picasso, painted when he was fifteen, capturing a solemn religious scene with classical precision.
Painted in 1896, First Communion is a significant example of Pablo Picasso's early academic training. At the age of fifteen, Picasso demonstrated a command of traditional techniques, composition, and light that mirrored the expectations of the Spanish art establishment. The work depicts a young girl kneeling in prayer before an altar, accompanied by her father and an altar boy.
The composition is structured around the contrast between the luminous white of the girl's communion dress and the dark, sombre interior of the church. Picasso employs a controlled palette, using deep shadows to create a sense of solemnity and quietude. The light source, emanating from the candles on the altar, illuminates the girl's veil and the prayer book she holds, drawing the viewer's eye to the centre of the scene.
This painting reflects the influence of his father, José Ruiz y Blasco, who was an art teacher and encouraged his son to master the rigours of classical painting before exploring more experimental styles. The brushwork is precise, showing a careful attention to the texture of the lace, the fabric of the vestments, and the architectural details of the church interior. Unlike the fragmented forms of his later Cubist period, this work adheres to the principles of naturalism and perspective. It provides a view into the artist's formative years in Barcelona, where he produced several large-scale canvases that demonstrated his technical proficiency. The work remains a clear record of the artist's early development, capturing a moment of religious ritual with formal gravity.
