Beschreibung
A dramatic depiction of the annual Girandola firework display at the Castel Sant' Angelo in Rome, captured by Joseph Wright of Derby.
Joseph Wright of Derby, a painter associated with the Enlightenment, possessed a fascination with artificial light sources. During his Italian tour in the 1770s, he witnessed the Girandola, an annual firework display held at the Castel Sant' Angelo in Rome. This painting captures the spectacle, where the fortress is engulfed in a brilliant, golden explosion of pyrotechnics against the dark Roman night.
The composition employs a classic framing device, using a large, silhouetted tree in the foreground to push the viewer back, creating a sense of distance from the event. The light from the fireworks dominates the scene, reflecting across the surface of the Tiber and illuminating the surrounding architecture. Wright uses a palette of deep browns, blacks, and ochres to contrast with the intense, glowing centre of the explosion. This technique, known as tenebrism, allows the artist to manipulate the viewer's focus through extreme light and shadow.
Unlike his scientific paintings, which often feature figures engaged in experiments, this work focuses on the atmospheric power of the event itself. The architecture of the Castel Sant' Angelo remains partially obscured by the smoke and light, adding to the drama of the scene. Wright's ability to render the ephemeral nature of light, particularly in a nocturnal setting, remains a defining characteristic of his output. The work reflects the eighteenth-century interest in the sublime, where natural or man-made phenomena evoke a sense of awe and scale. By documenting this specific Roman tradition, Wright provides a glimpse into the experiences of the Grand Tour, while simultaneously demonstrating his technical mastery over complex lighting effects.
