A powerful work from Goya's Black Paintings series, depicting two men in a desperate, inescapable struggle.
Fight With Cudgels is one of the fourteen Black Paintings created by Francisco Goya during his final years in Madrid. Originally painted directly onto the walls of his home, the Quinta del Sordo, the work was later transferred to canvas. It depicts two men locked in a violent struggle, their legs buried in the earth up to their knees. This detail prevents them from retreating, forcing a confrontation that appears both futile and inevitable.
The composition is stark. The figures occupy a desolate, barren terrain under a heavy, overcast sky. Goya uses a muted palette of ochres, browns, and greys, punctuated by the dark clothing of the combatants. His brushwork is loose and expressive, prioritising the raw energy of the scene over precise anatomical detail. The figures are distorted, their faces obscured or grimacing, which adds to the sense of primal aggression.
This work belongs to a series that reflects Goya's internal state and his observations of human nature. Unlike his earlier court commissions, these paintings were private, intended only for his own walls. The lack of a clear narrative or moral resolution invites various interpretations, ranging from political allegory regarding the state of Spain to a broader commentary on the destructive impulses of humanity. The painting remains a significant example of Goya's late style, where he moved away from traditional academic techniques toward a more subjective and psychological mode of expression. The focus remains on the physical tension between the two men, captured in a moment of suspended violence.
