Beschreibung
A minimalist abstract work from Cy Twombly's 1978 series, Fifty Days at Iliam, exploring themes of classical mythology through gestural forms.
This work is part of the ten-part cycle titled Fifty Days at Iliam, created by Cy Twombly in 1978. The series draws inspiration from Homer's Iliad, specifically the narrative arc concerning the rage of Achilles and the death of Patroclus. Twombly engages with classical mythology through a personal, gestural language that avoids literal representation.
The visual composition features three distinct, cloud-like forms arranged horizontally across a stark, white ground. The left form is rendered in a deep, saturated red, suggesting the violence and blood associated with the battlefield. The central form appears in a muted blue, while the rightmost form is a faint, graphite-only outline, representing the spectral nature of the figures. The application of medium is raw and immediate, with visible drips and scribbled textures that reveal the artist's physical process.
Twombly uses these abstract shapes to evoke the presence of the epic characters rather than depicting them in a traditional manner. The contrast between the heavy, coloured forms and the ghostly, uncoloured outline creates a sense of movement and decay. The work functions as a meditation on memory and the passage of time, themes that appear frequently in Twombly's practice. By stripping away the narrative detail, the artist focuses on the emotional weight of the Homeric tragedy. The simplicity of the arrangement allows the viewer to contemplate the relationship between the three figures, their shared history, and their ultimate fate in the Trojan War. This print captures the texture and nuance of the original materials, offering a clear view of the artist's mark-making and the interplay between colour and negative space.
