Ffestiniog in Gwynedd catches golden winter light on stone houses below snowy mountain crags, with bare trees and an old field wall framing the village from a grassy slope.
Ffestiniog’s mountain landscape was transformed by the nineteenth-century slate industry. Earlier hamlets and farms expanded as quarrying drew workers into the area. Many families also maintained smallholdings on the lower slopes, where enclosed paddocks and skilfully built dry-stone walls remain features of the surrounding countryside.
Bare trees spread warm brown branches across the near slope, above a dark stone field wall. Beyond them, pale houses with grey roofs step up the valley between wooded hills. A broad snowy summit rises behind darker crags, with ochre moorland below. Low winter sunlight warms the buildings beneath cream clouds and a clear blue sky.
