Beschreibung
A 1953 modernist oil painting by Le Corbusier, featuring a stylised human figure rendered through bold outlines and geometric colour planes.
Femme et mains, produced in 1953, captures the later stylistic period of Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, known professionally as Le Corbusier. While primarily recognised for his architectural contributions, Le Corbusier maintained a consistent practice in painting and drawing throughout his life. This work reflects his interest in the human form, rendered through a lens of geometric abstraction and rhythmic line work.
The composition is dominated by a central, stylised figure. The anatomy is reduced to essential shapes, with the torso and limbs articulated through bold, dark outlines that separate distinct colour fields. The palette includes primary and secondary tones, such as deep green, ochre, and blue, applied in flat planes that create a sense of balance across the canvas. The hands, positioned at the base of the work, are depicted with a simplified, almost schematic quality, which is characteristic of his approach to figurative subjects during this decade.
Le Corbusier often explored the relationship between the human body and the modular systems he developed for his architectural projects. In this painting, the figure does not exist in a realistic space. Instead, it occupies a flattened, decorative environment where the background and foreground merge. The interplay between the curved lines of the body and the rigid, straight edges of the surrounding forms demonstrates his preoccupation with order and proportion. The work avoids naturalistic representation, opting instead for a symbolic interpretation of the subject. It provides insight into the visual language he employed when moving away from the strictures of his earlier Purist manifestos, allowing for a more fluid and expressive application of paint while maintaining his characteristic rigour in composition.
