A detailed graphite and wash drawing by Henry Edridge depicting a rustic farm scene with pigs foraging under mature trees.
Henry Edridge, a contemporary of Thomas Girtin and J.M.W. Turner, is primarily recognised for his portrait miniatures and delicate pencil drawings. This work demonstrates his ability to capture rural life with a restrained, monochromatic palette. The composition centres on a rustic farm structure, constructed from horizontal timber planks, which sits beneath the heavy, arching boughs of mature trees.
In the foreground, a group of pigs forage near the base of the trees, providing a sense of quiet activity to the scene. Edridge employs a sophisticated use of grey wash to define the shadows cast by the foliage and the texture of the wooden buildings. The light appears soft and diffused, typical of the English countryside, which allows the artist to focus on the tonal variations rather than colour.
Unlike the more dramatic, atmospheric works of his peers, this drawing maintains a grounded, observational quality. The lines are precise yet fluid, reflecting the training Edridge received at the Royal Academy Schools. The interplay between the dark, dense canopy and the lighter, open ground creates a natural rhythm that guides the eye across the paper. This piece offers a glimpse into the pastoral interests of early nineteenth-century British artists, who often sought to document the vernacular architecture and daily rhythms of rural existence. It is a study of form and light, executed with the technical discipline that defined Edridge's career as a draughtsman.
