An imaginary city view by Gerrit Battem, featuring a high riverbank and detailed architectural forms rendered in graphite and grey wash.
This drawing by Gerrit Battem presents an imaginary view of a city perched upon a high riverbank. The composition is characteristic of the Dutch Golden Age tradition, where artists combined observation of nature with elements of fantasy to construct idealised scenes. Battem, active in Rotterdam, often produced works that balanced the precision of topographical study with the atmospheric qualities of wash techniques.
The foreground features a craggy, elevated bank rendered with dense graphite strokes, providing a sense of weight and texture. A solitary, gnarled tree stands at the edge of this precipice, acting as a framing device that draws the eye toward the architectural cluster in the middle distance. The city itself, with its varied spires and fortifications, sits atop the rising terrain, overlooking a calm river that winds through the lower portion of the frame. A small grove of trees occupies the riverbank below, creating a rhythmic contrast to the verticality of the city walls.
Battem employs grey wash to suggest depth and light, particularly in the sky where soft, horizontal clouds are rendered with minimal strokes. The use of wash allows for subtle transitions in tone, giving the scene a sense of quietude. Unlike the more rigid architectural renderings of his contemporaries, this work possesses a fluid quality, suggesting a sketch intended for personal study or as a preparatory concept for a larger painting. The absence of human figures enhances the sense of isolation and stillness within the scene. This print captures the delicate balance of line and shadow found in the original, preserving the artist's hand in the treatment of the rocky terrain and the soft, atmospheric sky.
