A seventeenth-century ink and wash drawing by Francisque Millet, depicting a quiet rural scene of a faggot gatherer and a resting figure.
Francisque Millet, a painter and draughtsman active in France during the seventeenth century, produced this study in pen and ink with grey wash. The work depicts a quiet, rural scene: a figure stands gathering wood while another rests near a small fire. The composition relies on the contrast between the figures and the dense, atmospheric foliage that occupies the background. Millet, who spent much of his career in Paris, often drew inspiration from the classical tradition of Nicolas Poussin, yet his focus here remains on the humble, everyday activities of rural life.
The application of wash creates a sense of depth, allowing the figures to emerge from the shadowed, textured surroundings. The artist employs a restrained palette, typical of his drawings, which emphasises the play of light and shadow across the forest floor. The figures are rendered with economy, their postures suggesting the weariness of manual labour. This piece provides a glimpse into the observational practices of the period, where artists frequently documented the lives of common people within the context of the natural world.
As a draughtsman, Millet demonstrated a clear understanding of tonal values. The grey wash serves to unify the scene, binding the foreground figures to the dark, overgrown thicket behind them. The work is unsigned, though it bears the stylistic hallmarks of Millet's hand, particularly in the treatment of the trees and the fluid, yet precise, ink lines. This print offers an opportunity to observe the technical skill involved in seventeenth-century drawing, where the artist balanced representational accuracy with the expressive potential of ink and wash. It remains a representative example of the genre studies produced by French artists of the era, capturing a fleeting moment of respite in the woods.
