Extreme Unction is one of the seven paintings in the first series of the Sacraments, commissioned by Paul Fréart de Chantelou. Nicolas Poussin completed this work in 1644, demonstrating his mastery of classical composition and narrative clarity. The scene depicts the administration of the last rites to a dying man, surrounded by his family and a priest.
Poussin organises the figures within a shallow, stage-like space, a technique he favoured to maintain focus on the central action. The dying man lies on a bed, his body angled to draw the viewer's eye toward the priest, who stands in a yellow robe. The lighting is dramatic, typical of the period, with deep shadows obscuring the background and highlighting the gestures of the mourners. Each figure displays a distinct emotional response, from the quiet grief of the seated woman to the more active lamentation of those standing.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones and the striking yellow of the priest's vestment to create visual order.
