A detailed historical etching depicting the 1642 execution of the Marquis of Cinq-Mars and François de Thou in Lyon.
This etching depicts the public execution of Henri Coiffier de Ruzé, Marquis of Cinq-Mars, and his associate François de Thou in 1642. The two men were condemned for conspiring against Cardinal Richelieu, the chief minister to King Louis XIII. The scene captures the grim reality of seventeenth-century capital punishment, set within a public square in Lyon. The executioner stands with a raised sword, while the body of one victim lies on the scaffold. The composition employs a clear, narrative structure common to historical prints of the period, documenting the event for a contemporary audience.
Johann David Zunner, a German engraver and publisher, produced this work to record a moment of political upheaval in France. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the era, using cross-hatching and varied line weights to define the figures and the architectural backdrop. The artist focuses on the starkness of the event, placing the figures on a raised platform to separate the drama from the surrounding crowd. The architectural elements provide a sense of scale and location, grounding the historical narrative in a recognisable urban environment. This print serves as a visual record of the political consequences faced by those who challenged the authority of the French crown during the reign of Louis XIII. The work reflects the interest in documenting current events through print media, a practice that allowed news of political trials and executions to circulate across Europe. The attention to costume and posture provides insight into the visual culture of the mid-seventeenth century, capturing the gravity of the proceedings with a direct, unadorned approach to the subject matter.
