A traditional Japanese woodblock triptych by Utagawa Hiroshige II, depicting figures gathering shellfish in the shallow waters of Karasaki.
This triptych by Utagawa Hiroshige II depicts a scene of daily life along the shore, capturing figures wading through shallow waters to gather shellfish. The composition is divided across three panels, a common format for ukiyo-e artists to expand the narrative scope of a single location. The figures are dressed in patterned kimonos, their garments rendered with clear outlines and flat areas of colour that define the aesthetic of the period.
In the background, the distant shoreline and sailing vessels provide a sense of scale, while the water is indicated by rhythmic, repeating lines that suggest movement. The artist employs a balanced palette, using muted blues for the water and sky, contrasted with the warmer tones of the figures' clothing and the baskets they carry. The scene reflects the interest in 'Famous Places of Edo', a popular subject matter that allowed artists to document both the natural beauty and the human activity of the region.
Utagawa Hiroshige II, a student of the master Utagawa Hiroshige, maintained the stylistic conventions of his predecessor while developing his own approach to figure placement and environmental detail. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, where each colour is applied via a separate carved block to build the final image. The work remains a clear example of the mid-nineteenth-century Japanese print tradition, focusing on the intersection of human labour and the coastal environment. The inclusion of cartouches in the upper corners and the artist's signature at the base provide the necessary context for the series and the creator, typical of the commercial print market in Edo-period Japan.
