Beschreibung
A striking portrait of Esther Kenworthy by John William Waterhouse, featuring expressive brushwork and a moody, atmospheric palette.
This portrait by John William Waterhouse depicts Esther Kenworthy, the artist's wife. Painted during the mid-1880s, the work demonstrates the painter's transition from his earlier academic training towards a more fluid, expressive application of paint. Unlike his large-scale mythological compositions, this study focuses on the immediate presence of the sitter.
The composition is tight, framing the subject in profile against a dark, textured background. Waterhouse employs a palette dominated by deep browns and ochres, which contrast with the pale, luminous skin of the sitter. The brushwork is notably energetic, particularly in the rendering of the hat and the surrounding space, where visible, sweeping strokes create a sense of movement. The light source is directed from the front, illuminating the side of the face and casting the features into a soft, contemplative shadow.
Esther Kenworthy was a frequent model for Waterhouse, appearing in various guises across his career. In this instance, the artist captures a moment of quiet observation. The attention to the texture of the fabric, specifically the bow at the neck and the structure of the hat, reveals his technical precision. The painting avoids the overly polished finish of his later works, offering instead a direct look at his process. The interplay between the dark, gestural background and the carefully modelled face creates a balance between abstraction and realism. This piece provides insight into the private life of the artist, documenting a personal connection that existed outside of his public commissions. The work remains a fine example of late nineteenth-century British portraiture, reflecting the shift towards a more personal and immediate style of painting.

Artist Biography
John William Waterhouse
He was born in Rome to English parents (both painters) and grew up surrounded by Italian art before moving to London as a child. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools and exhibited there from 1874 until his death in 1917. He was a Royal Academician, successful, respected, and thoroughly Victorian.
His technique is Pre-Raphaelite in spirit but Impressionist in handling. The early works are tighter, more archaeological, influenced by Alma-Tadema's classical scenes. The later paintings are looser, with broader brushwork and richer colour. The Lady of Shalott (1888) combines both: precise detail in the boat and tapestry, atmospheric softness in the trees and water.
He painted several versions of the same subjects. Two versions of The Lady of Shalott. Two of Ophelia. Multiple paintings of Circe. He returned to the same stories because the stories gave him what he needed: a beautiful woman in a dramatic landscape at a moment of transformation. The formula was reliable and the execution was consistently good.
He is sometimes grouped with the Pre-Raphaelites but was a generation younger than Rossetti, Millais, and Hunt. He was closer to the Aesthetic Movement and to late Victorian narrative painting. He is one of the most reproduced painters in the history of art prints, which would have pleased him.
