A detailed etching by Pieter Rottermondt depicting the biblical scene of Esau trading his birthright to Jacob for a meal.
This etching depicts the biblical narrative of Esau bartering his birthright for a bowl of pottage offered by his brother, Jacob. The composition draws heavily upon the stylistic conventions of the Dutch Golden Age, specifically the influence of Rembrandt, whose signature appears on the plate. The scene is set within a rustic interior, where the two brothers stand on opposite sides of a table. Jacob, positioned on the right, gestures towards a covered dish, while Esau, seated on the left, appears weary and dishevelled, his posture suggesting the exhaustion that led to his impulsive decision.
The artist employs a fine, calligraphic line to define the figures and the surrounding environment. The background features a doorway leading to an exterior space, where a secondary figure is visible, adding depth to the scene. Hanging from the ceiling, game birds and a hare provide a sense of domestic realism, grounding the mythological subject in a tangible, everyday setting. The play of light and shadow is managed through dense hatching and cross-hatching, creating a sense of volume and texture in the clothing and the table covering.
Rottermondt demonstrates a command of the etching medium, using varied line weights to distinguish between the foreground subjects and the more atmospheric background elements. The work reflects the period interest in humanising biblical stories, presenting the brothers not as distant icons, but as individuals caught in a moment of moral and physical vulnerability. The print captures the tension of the transaction, with the focus directed towards the interaction between the two men and the object of their exchange. This piece offers a view into the technical and thematic preoccupations of seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking, where narrative clarity and atmospheric detail were held in high regard.
