A woodblock print from the Yokohama-e genre, depicting European visitors in Japan during the mid-nineteenth century.
This woodblock print by Ichiryūsai Yoshitoyo belongs to the Yokohama-e genre, a category of ukiyo-e that emerged following the opening of the port of Yokohama to foreign trade in 1859. During this period, Japanese artists documented the arrival of Westerners, whose appearance, clothing, and customs were subjects of intense curiosity for the local population. The print depicts two European men, likely British, accompanied by horses. The figures are rendered with the stylistic conventions of the mid-nineteenth century, featuring bold outlines and a flat application of colour. The artist employs a specific visual shorthand to represent the foreigners, focusing on their facial hair, Western-style jackets, and trousers.
The composition is direct, placing the subjects against a neutral background to focus attention on their attire and equipment. The man in the foreground carries a long walking stick or crop, while his companion holds the reins of a horse. The print serves as a historical record of the cultural encounter between Japan and the West during the final years of the Edo period. The text within the cartouche identifies the subject matter, while the artist's signature and seal are present in the lower right section. The palette is restrained, relying on primary and secondary tones typical of the period's printing techniques. This work provides insight into how Japanese printmakers interpreted the presence of foreigners, often blending accurate observation with the established aesthetic traditions of the ukiyo-e school. It remains a document of the rapid social changes occurring in Japan as the country moved toward the Meiji Restoration.
