Beschreibung
A seminal wood relief by Jean Arp, featuring biomorphic shapes and a bold, saturated colour palette characteristic of his Dadaist period.
Jean Arp, a founding member of the Dada movement in Zurich, created this work during a period of intense experimentation with chance and organic abstraction. Enak's Tears (Terrestrial Forms) belongs to a series of wood reliefs where Arp moved away from traditional representational painting to explore the autonomy of form. The composition consists of layered, cut-out wooden shapes that suggest biological growth or cellular structures rather than fixed objects.
Arp utilised a limited palette of saturated colours to define the spatial relationships between the overlapping planes. The interplay of the deep blue, dark brown, and red sections creates a sense of physical depth, while the white, rounded element acts as a visual anchor within the arrangement. By removing the artist's hand from the final finish, Arp sought to achieve a sense of objective, natural creation. The work rejects the rigid geometry often associated with early twentieth-century abstraction, opting instead for fluid, biomorphic contours that appear to shift or expand.
This piece reflects Arp's interest in the relationship between human artifice and the processes of nature. The title itself, referencing the mythological or poetic, invites the viewer to consider the work as a fragment of a larger, unseen system. The construction of the relief, with its distinct shadows cast by the layered wood, emphasises the physical presence of the object in space. It remains a primary example of how Arp translated the spontaneity of Dadaist thought into a structured, tactile medium, moving beyond the canvas to engage with the three-dimensional environment.
