A panoramic view of the Valley of Mexico, capturing the vast terrain, distant volcanoes, and atmospheric sky with scientific precision.
José María Velasco Gómez is widely recognised for his meticulous documentation of the Mexican geography during the late nineteenth century. This work, one of several versions of the Valley of Mexico he produced, captures the expansive basin from the heights of the Cerro del Tepeyac. The composition employs a high vantage point, allowing the viewer to observe the transition from the immediate, rugged foreground to the distant, atmospheric horizon.
In the foreground, the artist renders local flora, such as prickly pear cacti, with scientific precision. This attention to botanical detail reflects his training in natural sciences and his interest in the physical environment. The middle ground reveals the valley floor, where the remnants of Lake Texcoco and the surrounding settlements are depicted with clarity. The path leading towards the centre of the composition draws the eye across the terrain, creating a sense of immense scale.
Above the valley, the sky occupies a significant portion of the canvas. Velasco Gómez was known for his careful observation of meteorological phenomena, and here he paints cumulus clouds that catch the light, providing a sense of depth and movement. The distant volcanoes, Iztaccíhuatl and Popocatépetl, are rendered with soft, blue-toned hues, which helps to establish the atmospheric perspective characteristic of his work. The painting functions as both a geographical record and an aesthetic interpretation of the Mexican national identity during the Porfiriato era. By combining rigorous observation with a balanced sense of order, the artist provides a clear view of the basin as it appeared before the rapid urbanisation of the twentieth century.
