Beschreibung
A striking example of Roberto Matta's abstract surrealism, featuring anthropomorphic figures suspended in a textured, blue atmospheric space.
Effare (1970) captures the distinct visual vocabulary of Roberto Matta, a figure who bridged the gap between European Surrealism and the emergence of Abstract Expressionism. Matta often explored the intersection of human consciousness and cosmic space, creating works that feel both biological and mechanical. In this composition, the figures appear as anthropomorphic entities, rendered with thick, dark outlines that separate them from the textured, cerulean background.
The interaction between the two forms suggests a narrative of communication or perhaps a confrontation. The figure on the left, seated and gesturing, contrasts with the taller, more rigid form on the right. Matta employs a technique of layering paint, where the blue field is applied with a tactile, almost agitated quality. White paint splatters across the lower section, introducing a sense of kinetic energy that disrupts the stillness of the primary subjects. This use of gesture and spontaneity reflects Matta's interest in the psychological state, where the canvas functions as a site for the projection of internal experience rather than a representation of the physical world.
Matta's approach to space is non-Euclidean. He avoids traditional perspective, preferring to suspend his subjects in a fluid, atmospheric medium. The resulting image is one of ambiguity, where the viewer is invited to interpret the relationship between the forms without the constraints of a fixed setting. The work demonstrates his ability to combine precise, graphic line work with a more visceral, painterly application of colour. It is a characteristic example of his later period, where the focus shifted toward more simplified, totemic figures that retain the eerie, otherworldly quality of his earlier, more complex compositions.
