A detailed 1888 architectural elevation drawing of a Renaissance-style interior wall, featuring wood panelling, decorative friezes, and wall-mounted furniture.
This architectural study by A. Warnemünde, dated 1888, presents a formal elevation of an interior wall designed in the Renaissance Revival style. The composition is structured with a central doorway flanked by symmetrical wall panels, demonstrating the precise draughtsmanship typical of late nineteenth-century interior design documentation. The lower portion of the wall features dark wood panelling with carved motifs, providing a grounded base for the lighter, more decorative elements above.
The upper wall surface is finished in a muted red tone, framed by classical mouldings. To the left, a circular wall-mounted object sits above a decorative console bracket. To the right, a wall-mounted shelf displays various vessels, including a pitcher and a covered dish, rendered with careful attention to their metallic sheen and form. Above the door and the wall panels, a frieze incorporates swags of fruit and foliage, interspersed with classical masks, reflecting the period's interest in reviving motifs from the Italian Renaissance.
Warnemünde employs a balanced colour palette, using earthy browns for the woodwork and soft blues and ochres in the decorative frieze. The drawing serves as a record of period-specific interior aesthetics, where historical references were integrated into contemporary domestic spaces. The use of ink outlines provides clarity to the architectural elements, while the watercolour washes define the textures of the wood, plaster, and metal objects. This work offers a view into the meticulous planning involved in nineteenth-century room design, where every detail, from the panelling to the placement of decorative objects, was considered as part of a unified scheme. The signature and date in the lower right corner confirm its origin within a professional design context, likely intended for a client or as part of a larger portfolio of interior concepts.
