A detailed hand-coloured etching from 1807 depicting the traditional regional dress of young women from Friesland and Groningen.
This hand-coloured etching originates from the publication 'Afbeeldingen van de kleedingen, zeden en gewoonten in de Bataafsche Republiek', released in Amsterdam in 1807. Evert Maaskamp, a publisher and printmaker, documented the regional dress of the Netherlands during a period of significant political transition. The print depicts two young women, one from Friesland and one from Groningen, standing before a simple green bench.
The composition focuses on the specific details of their regional attire. Both figures wear white lace caps, a common feature of Dutch provincial dress at the time. The woman on the left is dressed in a dark, textured gown with a pink bodice and distinctive green gloves, while the woman on the right wears a lighter, flowing white garment. Their poses are formal, reflecting the didactic nature of costume books from the early nineteenth century, which aimed to catalogue the diversity of local customs for a broader audience.
The etching technique allows for precise rendering of the lace patterns and the folds of the fabric. The application of colour is restrained, adhering to the conventions of early nineteenth-century fashion plates. The work provides a clear view of the sartorial differences between the two provinces, capturing the specific headgear and accessories that defined their respective identities. By presenting these figures side by side, the print invites a direct comparison of regional styles. This piece serves as a record of Dutch social history, documenting the visual markers of identity that persisted despite the homogenising influence of the Napoleonic era. The clean lines and balanced composition reflect the orderly aesthetic typical of Dutch print culture during this period.
