This stipple engraving depicts the Ecce Homo, a traditional subject in Christian iconography representing the moment Pontius Pilate presents Christ to the crowd before his crucifixion. Vieira Portuense, a significant figure in Portuguese Neoclassicism, employs a refined technique here that emphasises the emotional gravity of the scene. The composition is contained within an oval frame, a common device in late eighteenth-century portraiture that directs the viewer's attention to the subject's expression.
The figure of Christ is rendered with a focus on anatomical precision and soft modelling. His gaze is directed upward, conveying a sense of resignation and suffering. The crown of thorns is depicted with sharp, individualised detail, contrasting with the smooth, pale skin of the face.
