A radical 1850 interpretation of the Annunciation by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, featuring a sparse, modern composition and a cool, symbolic colour palette.
Dante Gabriel Rossetti completed Ecce Ancilla Domini in 1850, during the early years of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The painting depicts the Annunciation, a traditional subject in Christian art, yet Rossetti departs from the established conventions of the period. Instead of the typical grand, celestial setting, the scene occurs in a sparse, confined room. The Virgin Mary is shown as a young woman, sitting on a low bed, appearing startled and vulnerable rather than serene. Her red hair and pale complexion are characteristic of the models Rossetti favoured throughout his career.
The angel Gabriel stands before her, offering a lily, a symbol of purity. A white dove, representing the Holy Spirit, enters through the window. Rossetti employs a restricted, cool colour palette dominated by white, blue, and red, which creates a stark, almost clinical atmosphere. The composition is deliberately flattened, rejecting the deep perspective and chiaroscuro common in the academic painting of the time. This stylistic choice reflects the Pre-Raphaelite desire to return to the simplicity and directness of early Italian art, before the influence of Raphael.
The painting was met with significant criticism upon its initial exhibition. Critics found the unconventional portrayal of the Virgin Mary and the lack of traditional religious grandeur unsettling. Despite this reception, the work remains a primary example of the early Pre-Raphaelite aesthetic. It demonstrates the group's focus on naturalism, symbolic detail, and a rejection of the polished, dark tones of the Royal Academy. The inclusion of the red embroidery frame in the foreground adds a touch of domesticity to the scene, grounding the spiritual event in a tangible, human reality. This print captures the precise brushwork and the specific, muted tones of the original canvas, allowing for a close examination of Rossetti's early technical approach.
