This woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga depicts a dramatic encounter between an eagle and a monkey. Shigenaga was a significant figure in the early development of Ukiyo-e, active during the mid-Edo period. He is known for his technical contributions to the medium, including the use of hand-applied colour and the refinement of the pillar print format. This work belongs to the Kacho-ga genre, which focuses on birds and flowers, though it incorporates a narrative element through the inclusion of the primate.
The composition is vertical, utilising the space to create a sense of tension. The eagle occupies the upper portion, its wings spread as it perches upon a gnarled branch. The monkey is positioned below, partially obscured by the foliage, creating a sense of interaction between the two subjects. The lines are bold and graphic, characteristic of early 18th-century printmaking techniques before the widespread adoption of full-colour nishiki-e printing. The colour palette is restrained, relying on black ink for the primary outlines and shading, supplemented by hand-applied yellow tones on the leaves and specific details of the animals.
Shigenaga was an influential teacher, counting artists such as Suzuki Harunobu among his pupils. His work often displays a balance between decorative arrangement and observational detail. The print demonstrates the stylistic conventions of the period, where natural forms are simplified into clear, readable shapes. The paper shows signs of age, providing a tactile quality that complements the historical nature of the woodblock process.
