A mid-nineteenth-century Yokohama-e woodblock print depicting a Dutch merchant and his servant, reflecting Japan's early contact with Western traders.
This woodblock print by Ichiryūsai Yoshitoyo belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged in the mid-nineteenth century following the opening of the port of Yokohama to foreign trade in 1859. During this period, Japanese artists produced numerous prints depicting the arrival of Westerners, their customs, and their technology. These works served as a visual record for a public curious about the unfamiliar visitors from Europe and the Americas.
The composition features a Dutch merchant standing in a formal pose, dressed in a dark coat and hat. Beside him, a servant is depicted with distinct features and skin tone, looking up towards the merchant. The artist employs the characteristic flat colour planes and bold outlines typical of the Ukiyo-e tradition, while the subject matter reflects the specific historical context of Japan's encounter with global trade. The cartouche in the upper right corner provides the title, while the artist's signature and seal are visible on the left side of the print.
Yoshitoyo, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, captures the fascination and occasional caricature inherent in these early cross-cultural encounters. The print demonstrates the stylistic conventions of the era, where foreign subjects were often rendered with a blend of observation and imaginative interpretation. The palette remains controlled, using deep blue backgrounds to contrast with the lighter tones of the figures' clothing. This print provides insight into the visual culture of the Bakumatsu period, documenting the changing social environment as Japan transitioned towards the Meiji era. It remains a representative example of how traditional printmaking techniques were adapted to document contemporary events and the influx of foreign influence in a rapidly changing society.
