A woodblock print by Chōkyōsai Eiri depicting a historical encounter between a Dutch trader and a Japanese courtesan.
This woodblock print by Chōkyōsai Eiri depicts a cross-cultural encounter within the pleasure quarters of Edo-period Japan. The artist, known for his work in the late eighteenth century, captures a scene involving a Dutch trader and a courtesan from the Maruyama district. The composition utilises a framed interior space, contrasting the private intimacy of the figures with the stylised pine tree visible through the opening on the left.
Eiri employs the conventions of the ukiyo-e tradition, focusing on the juxtaposition of the foreigner's distinct features, such as his bearded face and European-style hat, against the refined aesthetic of the Japanese woman. The print belongs to the shunga genre, which explored themes of eroticism and social interaction. The figures are rendered with clean, precise lines, typical of the period's printmaking techniques. The colour palette remains balanced, using muted tones for the interior and clothing, which allows the focus to remain on the interaction between the two subjects. The inclusion of a small incense burner and the specific textile patterns on the garments provides a sense of period detail, reflecting the material culture of the time.
Chōkyōsai Eiri was a contemporary of Utamaro and often produced works that engaged with the popular culture of the Yoshiwara. This specific print offers a glimpse into the curiosity surrounding foreign visitors in Japan, who were largely restricted to the trading post at Dejima. The work functions as a visual record of these rare interactions, presented through the lens of contemporary artistic styles. The print demonstrates the technical skill involved in multi-block printing, with clear registration of the various colours and patterns across the paper surface.
