Beschreibung
Durham rises above a wooded loop of the Wear, its square cathedral towers and warm rooftops surrounded by blue water, with stone bridges connecting the leafy banks.
The old centre of Durham occupies a peninsula within a bend of the River Wear. Its cathedral and castle received UNESCO recognition in 1986, acknowledging their historic importance to a place shaped by worship and learning over more than a thousand years.
Three square towers lift above the long cathedral roof, with red and slate rooftops clustered below. Dense trees cover the steep green banks, broken by pale walls and small garden spaces. An arched stone bridge enters from the lower left, its piers reflected in turquoise water. The river curves around the wooded tip, enclosing the buildings beneath a light blue sky.
