A study of a coastal dune by Dutch Hague School artist Jan Willem van Borselen, capturing the muted tones and textures of the sandy terrain.
Jan Willem van Borselen was a prominent figure within the Hague School, a group of Dutch artists who sought to capture the atmospheric qualities of the Netherlands. This work, titled Duinpan, depicts a characteristic coastal dune formation. The artist focuses on the textures of the sandy terrain, the sparse vegetation clinging to the slopes, and the subtle shifts in light across the undulating ground.
Van Borselen employs a muted palette dominated by ochre, grey, and earthy greens, which accurately reflects the coastal environment of the Dutch North Sea. The brushwork is direct and observational, prioritising the physical reality of the site over idealised representation. By choosing a low-lying perspective, the artist invites the viewer to examine the erosion and the quiet, weathered nature of the dunes. The composition is balanced, with the central mound providing a sense of weight against the flatter, distant horizon.
This piece is representative of the plein air tradition that defined much of the Hague School output. Artists of this circle often ventured into the countryside to document the changing seasons and the specific light conditions of the Dutch coast. Van Borselen, in particular, was known for his ability to render the subtle variations in tone that occur under overcast skies. The work avoids dramatic flair, opting instead for a measured, honest depiction of the natural world.
