Beschreibung
Dryburgh Abbey in the Scottish Borders opens in pink stone above green lawns, with traceried windows, roofless arcades and shadowed arches surrounded by trees in gentle summer light.
Founded in 1150 by Hugh de Moreville, Dryburgh Abbey housed a Premonstratensian community beside the River Tweed. Its Gothic ruins retain the warm colour of local sandstone. Sir Walter Scott was buried here in 1832, adding a literary connection to the monastic site.
A tall gable rises close above the lawn, with fine window tracery cut through its pink masonry. Open arcades lead towards a darker pointed arch farther back. Trees enclose the ruins, their green and purple foliage softening the broken stone edges. Sunlight falls across the grass and upper walls, leaving cool recesses within the roofless summer scene.
