A detailed 18th-century etching by François Vivares, after a drawing by Nicolaes Berchem, depicting a group of rams and a sheep in a pastoral setting.
This etching, attributed to the French engraver François Vivares, depicts a small group of sheep and rams in a pastoral setting. The work bears the inscription 'Berghem delin', indicating that Vivares based his engraving on a drawing by the Dutch Golden Age painter Nicolaes Berchem. Berchem was well known for his depictions of livestock and rural scenes, and this print captures the characteristic attention to texture and form found in his original studies.
The composition is sparse, focusing entirely on the animals. One ram stands in profile to the left, its thick, shaggy fleece rendered with fine, precise lines. A second ram is partially obscured behind it, while a third rests on the ground to the right, its curved horns clearly defined. A fourth sheep stands facing away from the viewer, providing a sense of depth and variety to the group. The ground is suggested by minimal, light hatching, which keeps the focus on the anatomical details of the animals rather than the environment.
Vivares was a highly skilled engraver who spent much of his career in London, where he became a prominent figure in the reproduction of European masterworks. His ability to translate the fluid lines of a pen or chalk drawing into the controlled medium of an etching is evident here. The print demonstrates a clear understanding of animal anatomy, particularly in the way the wool is represented through varied line weights. This piece offers a glimpse into the 18th-century practice of disseminating European art through high-quality printmaking, allowing collectors to own reproductions of works by established masters like Berchem. The print remains a fine example of the technical precision required in classical engraving, maintaining a clean, balanced aesthetic that suits a variety of interior spaces.
