A classic diptych of the dragon and tiger by the Southern Song monk-painter Fachang Muqi, rendered in the traditional ink wash style.
This diptych by the Southern Song dynasty monk-painter Fachang Muqi represents a classic pairing in East Asian iconography. The dragon and tiger serve as symbols of the dual forces of the cosmos, often associated with the elements of water and wind. The dragon emerges from swirling clouds, while the tiger crouches amidst rocky terrain, both rendered in the characteristic 'splashed ink' style that defines Muqi's contribution to Chan Buddhist art.
Muqi utilised a restrained palette of monochrome ink to suggest form and atmosphere. Rather than relying on rigid outlines, he employed varied brush pressure and ink dilution to create depth. The figures appear to materialise from the mist, a technique that reflects the Chan emphasis on the transient nature of reality. The composition balances the two creatures, creating a sense of tension and harmony between the opposing forces of nature.
These works are historically associated with the Daitoku-ji temple in Kyoto, where they have been preserved for centuries. The original format consists of two hanging scrolls, designed to be viewed in tandem. The subtle gradations of tone and the economy of the brushwork demonstrate a mastery of ink wash techniques. This style influenced generations of painters in both China and Japan, particularly those within the Zen tradition who sought to capture the essence of a subject through minimal means. The prints available through Solis Prints are high-resolution reproductions of these historic scrolls, capturing the delicate textures of the original ink on silk.
