A refined mezzotint by Edouard Gautier d'Agoty depicting the death of Saint Francis, rendered with soft tonal transitions and traditional religious iconography.
This mezzotint by Edouard Gautier d'Agoty depicts the final moments of Saint Francis of Assisi. The composition focuses on the saint, who is shown in his characteristic brown habit, supported by two angels. One angel gestures towards a crucifix, while the other assists the saint, who rests his hand upon a skull, a traditional memento mori symbolising the transience of life. The use of the mezzotint technique allows for a soft transition between light and shadow, creating a sombre, atmospheric quality suitable for the subject matter.
Gautier d'Agoty belonged to a family of French engravers known for their contributions to colour printing. This work demonstrates the technical precision required for multi-plate colour mezzotint, a process that involves layering different inks to achieve a painterly effect. The palette is muted, relying on earth tones, deep reds, and ochre to convey the gravity of the scene. The figures are rendered with a softness that is characteristic of the period, moving away from the harsh contrasts found in earlier religious prints.
The iconography follows established traditions in Western art, where the death of the saint is presented as a moment of spiritual transition rather than mere physical expiration. The presence of the skull and the crucifix serves to ground the scene in theological reflection. By employing the mezzotint medium, the artist achieves a depth of tone that enhances the quiet, meditative nature of the composition. This print offers a view into the technical capabilities of eighteenth-century printmaking, where the boundaries between reproductive engraving and fine art were often blurred. The work remains a clear example of the period's interest in combining religious narrative with sophisticated print techniques.
