Annibale Carracci painted this work, commonly known as Domine, Quo Vadis?, during his period in Rome. The scene depicts a narrative from the apocryphal Acts of Peter. Saint Peter, fleeing persecution in Rome, encounters the resurrected Christ carrying his cross on the Appian Way. Peter asks the question, 'Lord, whither goest thou?', to which Christ replies that he is returning to Rome to be crucified a second time. This encounter prompts Peter to return to the city to face his own martyrdom.

Carracci employs a balanced composition that places the two figures in a direct, confrontational dialogue. Christ is shown in a dynamic, forward-moving posture, his body turned towards the viewer while his gaze remains fixed on Peter. His form is modelled with a sense of physical weight and anatomical precision, characteristic of Carracci's training in the Bolognese tradition. Peter, positioned on the right, is shown in a state of surprise and recognition, his hands raised in a gesture of humility and awe. The heavy drapery of his blue and yellow robes provides a contrast to the relative nudity of Christ.

The setting is a simplified, open space that suggests the Roman countryside. The trees and the distant architectural ruins serve to frame the figures without distracting from the central interaction. The lighting is clear and even, allowing for the articulation of form and the expression of emotion on the faces of the protagonists. This painting is held in the collection of the National Gallery in London and represents the artist's ability to combine classical clarity with the emotional intensity that would define the early Baroque period.
